People have recently searched for top global car models
available in India. To analyse the global models one needs to understand that
they are of 2 types.
1) Cars manufactured in India and exported to outside world
India is becoming a manufacturing hub for automobile companies and this possible due to
- Availability of automobile part manufacturers
- Cheap labour rates as compared to the world
- Ease for doing business (India is gradually improving its rank)
Another factor which adds up to the above points is also that few manufacturers don’t want to rely only on China and want to diversify in India as well. With Tesla entering India, it will further attract more manufacturers to set up manufacturing facilities in India. You can to the list of Top 25 models exported from India
2) Cars manufactured outside and imported in India
Another way to have a global model in India is to import the model. There are 3 ways in which manufacturers usually import vehicles to India
- CKD : Completely Knocked Down
- SKD : Semi Knocked Down
- CBU : Completely Built-Up
Different kind of import options has different import
duties with the lowest on CKD, followed by SKD and then by CBU. The form of
imports done is also dependent on the type of manufacturing facilities the company
have in India. Luxury car manufactures like Audi, BMW and Mercedes have manufacturing
units in India and have already formulated ways to import different models
based on demand in India. For manufacturers not available in India, the
vehicles can still be imported as CBU but will attract high import duty.
Please note, India has a lot of global car models but
the specification of a vehicle manufactured to be sold in India may differ from
the one getting exported. This is because the manufacturers’ needs to
comply with the country-specific regulations where the vehicle is exported.
